From Noreaster To Norovirus – Getting Walloped in Hoboken, NJ

By Kathy Zucker • Saturday, January 4, 2013

Happy New Year! Wait, it is the new year, right? I’ve lost all track of time since I’ve been housebound due to sick kids and snow.

My New Year plans started out so well. Fresh off a blogger party that I hosted in Bryant Park, all the attendees had a lot of fun and were full of plans to get together again soon. And what says celebration better than NYC and New Year’s eve? People were reaching out to me, saying, “If anybody knows of an awesome family-friendly place to celebrate NYE, it’s Kathy!”

Well, Kathy rang in the new year dancing with a bucket and mop. That’s right, I spent new year’s eve 2013 glamorously cleaning up vomit as my family succumbed to the norovirus outbreak sweeping the US and Canada. Although I did get to wear my brand new cashmere sweater and have a sparkling midnight toast.

Even though my kids have been sick for weeks, there have been bright spots in between bathroom trips. Yesterday, my one healthy kid got to work off some energy building snowmen in the gated courtyard while the little ones did some bird watching.

Aside from the white stuff on our balcony, I can barely tell the difference between days since I am greeted in the morning with statements like “I threw up” or its presage, “My tummy hurts.” As apartment dwellers, we shovel zero snow and our car is downstairs in our indoor garage, so if we need to make a Target run to pick up pedialyte, my husband can hop in the car and be back within 20 minutes. We also get ambient heat from the apartments around us, which comes in handy for impromptu fashion shows.

Yesterday, zero people vomited in my house, so I am cautiously optimistic that we have turned the corner on the Zucker household epidemic of winter 2013. As opposed to, you know, the norovirus colonizing the other three members of the family. If you don’t hear from me in the next week or two, it’s a safe bet that I am bedridden.

Happy holidays and here’s to getting together in a happy and HEALTHY new year!
