Small Business Saturday in Hoboken and Jersey City

Today is the Saturday after Thanksgiving, making it the fourth annual Small Business Saturday. Intended to encourage American Express cardholders to shop at local small businesses by registering their cards to receive a credit on purchases made November 30th at participating businesses, the event has generated some controversy this year over high fees. Local businesses accepting AMEX had the option to include their locations in the Small Business Saturday map.

Which Hoboken merchants are participating? When I entered “07030” into the interactive online map, the site showed 100 merchants in each of the five categories – Dining, Shopping, Entertainment, Travel and Services. Perennial family favorites Elysian Cafe and both locations for Grimaldi’s Coal Brick-Oven Pizzeria were included, as well as surprises such as Prime Time Early Learning Center (charge your latest daycare bill to score a $10 statement credit.) The map also allows searches for individual merchants.

It’s not too late to register for Small Business Saturday.

Here’s where I am going to be shopping this Saturday.

If you were hoarding AMEX rewards points, now is the time to splurge. AMEX is offering 30% off many gift cards, with face values starting at the $25 American Express® Shop Small® Gift Card.
