Hoboken visitor parking permits now available online

I stopped by the parking authority yesterday to pick up visitor street parking hangtags and saw a sign saying that visitor parking permits can now be purchased online at http://www.hobokennj.org/hpuonline/

When you login to the system, if you select “Visitor on-street” then it gives you the option to purchase single-day scratch-off hang tags or a multi-day Visitor parking permit placard. The costs are:

  • Multi-Day Placard: $5/day, 7 day maximum per purchase
  • Scratch Off Hang Tag (Mail): $5/tag, 7 tag maximum per purchase, plus $0.55 postage
  • Scratch Off Hang Tag (Pickup): $5/tag, 7 tag maximum per purchase

When I selected scratch off hang tag, a message popped up saying, “Please Note: This permit may not be printed. You must choose below to either have your permits mailed to you or to pick them up in person at HPU, located on the ground floor of City Hall.”

The next window says, “Supporting Document: Optional.” I skipped this section. At the payment window there was a $2 convenience fee listed plus a credit card processing fee that varies depending on which card you use – you also have to pay the credit card fee when you buy hangtags in person at City Hall.

The total cost for seven visitor single day parking hangtags came to $39.08, using an American Express card to pay. You can pay via credit card
(Visa/Mastercard/Discover/American Express), check, money order or cash/coupon in person.

It takes two business days for purchases to be approved but given the long lines I often encounter at the Hoboken Parking Authority office, especially in the beginning of the year when parking permits get renewed, it is nice to have the online option.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend, the weather looks great!

Kathy

Note: Visitor hangtags are good for 24 hours of street parking Monday-Saturday (free street parking on Sundays!) Don’t forget to tell visitors to park at the WHITE signs with green lettering! Pics & details are here.

  1. Hi Kathy! Great post! What sort of documents are needed to pick them up? Proof of residency? What is the placard all about? I need to get some parking passes.

Thanks, Emily! You need to be a Hoboken resident to buy visitor hangtags. The ones being sold now are good through 2014; you scratch off the month, day and year to get 24 hours of street parking. You need a lease + utility/cable bill in your name to prove residency either in person at the Parking Utility or online – you upload scanned documents when you apply for an account. It took a month for my account to get approved but once that happened it was MUCH faster and easier to get my resident and visitor parking passes online; those HPU lines January-March are no joke.
