What’s the story with access to the Union City Firefighters Memorial Pool?
There has been a lot of confusion regarding who can access the publicly funded Union City Firefighters Memorial Pool. I called the pool to figure out access. According to my contact, Hoboken and Union City residents are permitted with no restriction on hours. When I asked about pool capacity, I was told the ratio is 25 people per lifeguard with an average staff of 7 lifeguards. That puts the typical maximum capacity at 175 people.
Since there are 50,000 residents in Hoboken, I asked about the pool policy if more people show up than the maximum capacity and was told people would be asked to leave. Another Union City pool attendant told me that when there is a line of people waiting to get in they typically empty the pool every ninety minutes and give access priority to children and senior citizens.
