Making Appliance Replacement Painless
My washing machine is about to die. Andy Denny says the transmission is shot (my washer is a car!?) He already fixed my dryer once for $100 (have I mentioned how awesome it is to have friends?) so I guess I have run out of luck. Time for a new washer. And since I LOATHE our cheap developer-supplied stackable Frigidaire model, that also means a new dryer to go with the upgraded LG stackable washer I have coveted for the last 2.5 years.
$1,600 for the two. Ouch. But with a new baby on the way and a commensurate increase in laundry, I had to take the plunge.
I remembered seeing a hefty balance in my American Express Membership Rewards account statement. Hmm. Didn’t I also receive a marketing email about some sort of rewards points sale?
I always redeem my Membership Rewards for gift cards. At 5,000 points (1 point earned for every dollar you spend) for a $50 giftcard, they make great gifts. I can’t remember the last time I spent actual cash on a wedding present.
About once a year, they run a huge sale and as luck would have it, Home Depot gift cards are available at a 30% discount. My 64,000 points (I put all my business purchases onto one card, LOVE being an entrepreneur) got me $900 in giftcards. Can we say PSYCHED?
Home Depot provides free delivery & old appliance haul-away, plus they were running a promotion that got me another $175 off. Add in 4% MrRebates and the entire purchase cost me about $400 in cash.
With deals like that, I am looking forward to the kitchen appliances breaking too!
